I think the standees are fine but I would be interested in your suggestions for alternative figures.

I much prefer for a game to use figures - but I think it would be difficult to find very good alternative figures prepainted or otherwise to go with this game when you consider where it is based - Medieval Japan. It's a sort of niche part of Medieval Japanese folklore they've gone for as a background setting. It would not be a problem if it were just Samurai vs Samurai but the market is already filled with up with this sort of thing so you can see why they did what they did. And it is based on a specific comic book series which has it's own distinctive look which I really like.

Even Hazgaard have not come up with a complete set of painted or unpainted figures ,as yet , to go with the game and I've not seen anywhere else that produces anything that comes really close , especially for some of the Demon characters. It dosn't help that graphics for the game are so good , IMHO , and it would be very difficult to match up to the graphics. It's a shame they haven't gone down the pre-painted plastic figure route like ToY did for Tannhauser or Rackham did for AT-43. But I'm not sure how big Hazgaard are and if you look at the mess that Rackham got into maybe they were right not to.

And now they've started to release some of the graphics for a larger expansion which includes a floating ghost and zombie samurai which is only going to make things that much more difficult. Not that i'm trying to put you off or anything as I'd love to be able to play the game using figures but you are a far braver man than I am to try and you obviously have a greated kowledge in this field of endevour  so good luck.

For all you Okko players there is a new download from the official french site of 5 new gaming tiles.
These are full 7 by 7 tiles as opposed to the earlier elements and odd sized tiles released.
Also I believe the artwork is done by the original comic artist Hub.

you can get them at the following link :

http://www.hazgaard.com/okko/pdf/plansdesolshub.pdf

Something I found out the other day is that the first of the two blogs listed in my earlier posting actually belongs to one of the game designers of Okko.

There is also a discussion on Board Game Geek about official plastic figures for Okko - the short being they are way too costly to produce for the current demand based on total world wide sales of the actual game. The metal figures were mainly aimed at fans of the comic rather than for use with the game. One highlight is that one of the Okko designers joined the discussion. A far cry from FFG's total abscence from any discussion anywhere on Tannhauser.

Thanks, tomodachi.

I am thinking about getting the official figures but not fully painting them. I am thinking about a one color tint and wash for each team. I just have no time for painting...

Upon further reading of the french site - it being a flash based site google translate does not work very well so its reading with a French/English dictionary inhand - the new tile pieces are also part of a scenario creation competition using 4 of the 5 tiles. So expect a scenario using the tiles to appear sometime in the future on the French site. Hopefully more than one but who knows.

It's taken a while but I've finally found the official site for the original French comic ( in French of course ).

It's full of lots of great artwork but nothing for the game. Not that that is anything to moan about.

Latest news is that there is a new French comic on the horizon so hopefully later in the year the English language version should be out.

Well there's no stopping the news coming out in Okko land. They have just announced the second full sized expansion Okko, l’Ère de Karasu is planned for release in French in June. No mention of an English version but they released the English version of the base game inside a year and the first expansion inside two months of the French versions. This expansion is going to need a whole lot more translation work for the English version but I'm hoping for a release this side of Christmas ( my Christmas list to Santa is already begining to fill up what with the rumoured  release of Space Hulk version 3 from GW due sometime later this year as well ).

The main points are 6 reversible game tiles , 20 new characters ( cards and standees ) , 14 Event cards , 4 Kamis (  spirit of the ancestors ) ?? , 12 equipment cards , 9 scenarios and new rules for magic and gaining experience to improve characters in a campaign situation ( if my translations skills have not completly fallen apart ).

here's the link for those interested in the French announcement

http://www.asmodee.com//jeux-de-s...5deea06465e67ecf59afc&ID=1147

It's a real shame ToY and Asmodee are not in control of the English version of our favourite game like Hazgaard and Asmodee are in control of the English version of Okko , we then might well see a whole lot more support and a more compact release schedule of Tannhauser stuff. We can but dream.

Sundance - take a look at this thread over at BGG - http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/395181 - to get a full set of quality moulds for 20 plastic figures would cost in the region of £40,000 ( $55,000) and with total world wide sales of the game of less than 10,000 units it would be finacial suicide at the moment. To cover the first expansion another  £18,000 ( $25,000 ) and to cover the new expansion a further £40,000 ( $55,000 ). All this before a single figure has been has even been produced , I don't think it's going to happen any time soon. I would love for it to happen and I think their inclusion in the game or as an optional extra would boost sales of the game but don't hold your breath.

With the Hazgaard / Rackham cooperation I would love to see a Confrontation Army that just happened to look like the Okko characters.

A guy can dream...

My son and I played Okko and we played the recommended beginner sized army and he wiped me out. The movement and combat are really different than Tannhauser or Heroscape and we are looking forward to playing again. The game only took about 15 minutes which is great because we will often have a half hour or so and now have another gaming option.

Since it costs movement points to change your facing and to move sideways, you really need to plan your move. You also really need to be sure that you have a good advantage going into a fight because the attacker can die...

Update on English release of 2nd expansion.

from Asmodee US via BGG thread due July 2009.

Hazgaard/Asmodee sure knock FFG's attempts at releasing translated material in to the proverbial cocked hat. If this holds true the English version will be out less than six weeks after the French release.

Just in time for my birthday to boot     happydance  happydance

And I was thinking I would have make do with the French version until nearer to Christmas.

Another snippet I picked up from the French forum the latest printing of the base game comes with the standees have a back image where the original standees had a blank black back. There is also a promise that the front/back image standees will be available as a seperate item for thoose that want to get them without having to buy the whole game.

Doc - I do love your dream about Hazgaard/Rackham Confrontation crossover army that would be shiny very very shiny - if they can do crossovers in the comics world I don't see why it can't be done in the gaming world. You've prooved it can work to great effect with your creations for Tannhauser.
